- To promote golf as a viable form of rehabilitation and recreation for the disabled.
- To bring together able and disabled golfers to share their love for the game, in the spirit of friendship and competition.
- To create a public awareness of challenges facing disabled golfers, and to highlight their achievements.
SADGA's Areas of Operation:
1. First Swing Clinics
The First Swing Programme started in 2003 as a pilot project with a handful of disabled children. Currently, there are 170 children and 36 adults actively involved on a weekly basis. The objective is to build these numbers up to 200 active children in 2010 and to 450 by 2014. Currently we hold coaching sessions in twelve schools situated in six provinces in South Africa.
The focus of the First Swing Clinics (sponsored by Nedbank) has also shifted from just teaching the children how to play golf properly to equipping them with life skills, and more specific golf industry related life skills. The children will be exposed to the various related industries such as golf course management, green keeping and the hotel and hospitality industry. We have also started annual training camps, where selected children get extra golf coaching and a structured career guidance programme. The First Swing Programme also provides conduit to national tournaments and the Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open.
2. Regional Days *Currently under Review*
"The next step up for disabled golfers are regional golf tournaments," Eugene said. "These tournaments are open to all family and friends, current and potential sponsors and new members. The golf days also serve as an important meeting place for disabled golfers as they get the opportunity to home their skills," Eugene, himself a very handy 15-handicapper, explained.
"New members are welcome to play in these regional tournaments at any time of the year," Eugene said. "Our thanks go to golf clubs and estates who have accommodated us with affordable rates so that all can join in the fun and competition."
These regional days are now running in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
3. SA Disabled Open
The Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open has been quoted by the 2007 champion Mick Horsley, from the UK, as the best disabled golf tournament in the world!
Attracting players from all over the world, this prestigious event continues to grow and develop, and to receive accolades from all that have experienced playing or sponsoring the tournament. 2009 will see the tournament leave the Western Cape and the wonderful Erinvale Golf Estate to go to the north of South Africa, the city of Johannesburg.
SADGA prides itself in the fact that they strive to include all disabilities. Categories include: Amputee, Wheelchair, Deaf, Visually and Les Autres.
4. International Tours
Every year SADGA players travel to play in International events.
