Newsclip creates climate change awareness with a giant CO2 ball
Passersby may find themselves doing a double take as they drive past Newsclip’s head office in Roodepoort, which now houses a giant ‘CO2 ball’. The ball, a massive inflated balloon measuring 5.2 meters high, was created to represent half a tonne of carbon dioxide - a full tonne, standing 3 stories tall was simply too big to put anywhere! Half a tonne at nearly 2 stories tall is still an impressive sight that puts into perspective the 92 tonnes of carbon dioxide the company is offsetting through its solar farm every year.
The balloon will be a permanent fixture at the premises, where it will be used to educate visitors to the solar farm about climate change and the issues surrounding it. “When people drive to work every day, heat their water, turn their lights on and off and run their household appliances, they do not realise or understand the amount of carbon dioxide they produce. The balloon, something people can see and touch, will help generate a better understanding of this and, we hope, motivate them to lower their carbon footprint”, says MD Simon Dabbs.
