“We can all do the best we can to mitigate the risks of developing a dread disease by living healthy and avoiding stress but, life is unpredictable - you never know when you may be dealt a cruel and unexpected blow.  Women do so much for so many and should the unthinkable happen, it’s better to be prepared,” says Robyn Farrell, CEO of 1st for Women Insurance.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer deaths among women are set to rise to 60% by 2030. This is a frightening statistic and thought, one which reiterates the importance of women having adequate dread disease cover in place.

Farrell says that most people take their health and their ability to work and earn a living for granted, giving little thought to how they would survive financially if they were to be diagnosed with a severe illness.

“While it’s reassuring to know that with modern medical advances, our chances of surviving a major health setback are in fact pretty good, it may not always be possible to get back to work immediately.  That’s why everyone, no matter their age, should consider buying dread disease cover,” says Farrell.

Dread disease insurance, also known as critical illness cover and living benefits cover, is designed to pay out a lump sum on diagnosis of a life-threatening disease such as cancer.

The lump sum from your insurance payout can be used for whatever purpose you require, making it one of the best ways of protecting your savings and ensuring that you and your family are not burdened financially while you recuperate from a life-threatening illness or some other traumatic life-changing event.

The degree to which you are insured against diseases varies according to the insurance company you choose and the type of policy. 1st for Women life insurance offers All Woman Dread Disease Cover, which provides cover for female related cancers like breast cancer and cervical cancer, as well as cover for childhood related cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma, pregnancy complications and more.

Farrell concludes saying that the best time to take dread disease cover is now, while you still can.

“If you wait until you are older or until you are struck down with a life-threatening disease, it will mean that your premiums will be much higher. You also run the risk of not getting the cover you need at all,” says Farrell.
