Friday, 10 March 2023 – AgriSETA delivered a provincial career summit in Middledrift, Eastern Cape in collaboration with Fort Cox Agriculture and Forestry Training Institute and its strategic partners, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development, and Agriculture Research Council.

The event was attended by AgriSETA’s Chairperson of the Board, Ms Sharon Sepeng who delivered the keynote address to over 500 local learners from 24 schools in the respective regions of King Williams Town, Alice, Keiskammahoek, and Fort Beaufort, to their educators, education district representatives, and local leaders among other official government and private sector stakeholders of the day.

“The core activity of the event was for AgriSETA and sister SETAS, higher learning institutions, as well as public and, private entities, including employers, to widen the scope of career choices to learners from grade 9 to12. The learners come from local rural environments and do not necessarily have access to such services and specifically, not focussed exhibitions that provide a wide array of career choices”, said Ms Sepeng. She further added, to know that our outreach is spread across the length and breadth of South Africa to give learners an opportunity to decide their future, gives me the greatest pleasure.”

The event had close to 36 exhibitors who come from academic institutions, sister SETAS, private sector employers and other key stakeholders in the education fraternity.

“Encouraging school-going learners to take up careers in agriculture serve as the basis of our work at grassroots level. However, my team know my passion for education, so widening the scope by bringing on board sister SETAS and other stakeholders, was a prerequisite for me”, said Dr Innocent Sirovha, AgriSETA’s CEO.

In doing justice to the gathering, as with all other such events hosted by AgriSETA, each grouping of learners spends at least 20 minutes at each stand, which serves to ensure that the presentations are interactive, authentic, and qualitative. [words: 341]
