Start prepping early

It is important to start preparing and revising your work well in advance of the exams. Don’t leave your studying for the week before the exam, as this will result in higher levels of stress that can easily be avoided.

Create your own study schedule that’s easy to stick to

Check your exam timetable and then draw up a study schedule that will afford you enough time to get through all of your work before the big exams officially start. This is a great way to help you stay organised as well as calm and focused.

Ask questions in class – no question is a dumb question!

Before your exams start, try to go through all your notes and sections of your work that doesn’t make sense to you or that you still need clarity on. Take these questions with you to class and make sure you make time to talk to your teacher about the specific things you need better understanding on.

Set up mock tests at home

Ask your friends or parents to look at your work and set up mock tests for you to take, when you complete sections of your work. This will assist in preparing you for questions that may arise in your exams.

Take breaks for studying

It is important to keep your brain focused on your work, when you are studying and the best way to do that is by taking breaks. Use this time productively, by not watching television, playing games or being on social media. Rather, take a walk around the garden, do some light stretches or play with your pet.

Stay well rested during exam time

Exams are only for a short period during the year and even though we all enjoy staying up late, make sure you get plenty of rest before and during your exams. This will make you more alert and readier for studying as well as for writing your exams.

Reward yourself regularly

Do something fun on days or weekends when you don’t have to study. Go to a movie or to the park and spend some quality time with family and friends. It is important to reward yourself, so it is easier to get through the dedicated study times that you have ahead of you, leading up to exams.

Stay hydrated!

It is important to stay hydrated during stressful times in order to ensure your body and mind is operating at its best!

“Final exams can be a stressful time for many and the best way to keep from getting overwhelmed is to be well prepared. Do not leave your studying until a day or two before the exam, as you will be setting yourself up for failure. By doing your best during exam times you will be creating a better future for yourself which in itself is very rewarding, explains Head of Schools at Future Nation School, Mampho Langa.
