The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation officially releases the Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum Report to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa at a handover ceremony on 27 March 2019 at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

The handover ceremony will include a gathering of a cross-section of society from the public and private sectors, civil society, trade unions, youth, active citizens and communities to reflect on the exchanges of dialogue, ideas and knowledge generated at the Inclusive Growth Forum's notable gathering held in June 2018 at the peaks of the Drakensberg.

This Report captures the discussions, debates and consensus around central issues, which the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation hopes will be a call for action and will provide support for decision-makers at all levels of government, business and civil society.

This is the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation's contribution – the important work that must be done to restore South Africa to the country we once dreamed it would be.

Media are invited to share the successes and aspirations of the Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum with the people of South Africa as we work towards growing this ambitious dialogue forum and build a forward-looking annual gathering that initiates ongoing positive change for all.

The handover ceremony will include a video screening of the highlights of the Forum on Wednesday 27 March 2019.

About the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum

The Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum from 15 to 17 June 2018 was a high-profile gathering of thought leaders to generate dialogue and exchange, develop action plans and build agreement in mapping out the way forward to achieve the overarching goals of the National Development Plan. The conference looked to contribute to socio-economic development in South Africa by building a shared future towards prosperity for all.

Former President Motlanthe  brought together a cross-section of South African leaders to map a renewed vision and era for South Africa. He expressed the sincere hope that above all else, the Forum would inspire those present to devote their energies and creative abilities to bringing forth practical ideas that will propel our nation forward.

The Forum created an environment which enabled participants to freely express their views around key issues and to equip the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation in its work to:

•             provide a moral imperative for government;

•             articulate a vision for an inclusive economy and a more caring society, free of patriarchy and discrimination;

•             highlight the side-lining of civil society, especially youth, from key discussions and debates;

•             focus on finding common ground between stakeholders in national debates;

•             recognise that the land reform programme has been unacceptably slow;

•             denounce the massive cumulative financial cost to South Africa of State capture and its frustration of economic growth, which is key to job creation; and

•             offer support to our leaders in the tough decisions they must make.

"It is vital that a level of consensus, both in terms of analysis of our factual situation, but also through a shared set of beliefs about the direction over the next few years, be developed to stabilize and shift the country on the right path." - Former President Kgalema Motlanthe
